DTR - Define The Relationship!

August 8, 2021- The Nineteenth Sunday of Ordinary Time -  Homily given by Fr. Tom Rafferty at the 9:00 am Sunday Mass.

Fr. Tom Rafferty has been the Pastor at St. Anthony of Padua Church in the Woodlands since 2008. He is a native Houstonian who graduated from St. Thomas High School and St. Mary’s Seminary downtown. Fr. Tom was ordained a priest in 1983 and has served at 7 other parishes in the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston before his assignment in The Woodlands.

We congratulate Fr. Rafferty on his new assignment as the Vicar for Clergy of the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston beginning on Monday, August 9.

This was Fr. David Lugo's Thanksgiving Mass for his ordination to the priesthood on August 15, 2020 in St. Louis, Missouri. He planned to celebrate his first Mass here at St. Cyril right after his ordination, but could not due to the pandemic at that time.

Remember the St. Cyril bookstore? Fr. Lugo's parents were active members of this parish and in his adolescence David was very active in our Youth Ministry and Children’s RE. We are truly blessed to know that a Vocation to the Priesthood emerged from our own parish of St. Cyril.

In Sunday’s Gospel Jesus calms the seas but rebukes the disciples in the boat by saying “Why are you terrified? Do you not yet have faith?” A traditional image of the Church is one of a boat and the “boat” that is St. Cyril of Alexandria has been tossed and damaged in the storms of the pandemic.

With that storm seemingly dying down we must now assess the damages that have been inflicted on our “parish boat” and strategically determine what is needed as we move forward into a still uncertain future. We will move forward with an urgent concern, not terrified, but deeply concerned.

En el evangelio del domingo, Jesús calma los mares pero reprende a los discípulos en la barca diciendo: “¿Por qué están aterrorizados? ¿Aún no tienes fe?” Una imagen tradicional de la Iglesia es la de un barco. El "barco" que es San Cirilo de Alejandría ha sido arrojado y dañado en las tormentas de la pandemia.

Con esa tormenta aparentemente amainando, ahora debemos evaluar los daños que se han infligido en nuestro "barco parroquial" y determinar estratégicamente lo que se necesita a medida que avanzamos hacia un futuro aún incierto. Avanzaremos con una inquietud urgente, no aterrorizada, sino profundamente preocupada.
